Why I Wear Black

Neutral in palette. Iconic in purpose.

At a recent networking event, someone greeted me with a warm smile and said, “Oh! You’re not wearing black today!”

I laughed… then I paused. They were right—and they had no idea why that even mattered.

Yes, I love the quote: “Those who wear black live colorful lives.” But for me, there’s more to it than aesthetic. I wear black to be neutral. To hold space. To position myself as a mirror—not a moodboard—for my client muses.

When I show up for a client call, I’m not there to imprint my style or aesthetic onto their brand. I’m there to uncover theirs.

Black is classic, polished, uniform, and professional. But more importantly—it’s conscious, intentional and symbolic. It says: This space is for you. It signals that we’re here to discover and unveil what makes you you.

It’s my neutral to your iconic moments.

Early in my career, back when I was still styling clients, I had what I now refer to as “the sweater moment.” I wore the cutest tan-and-white off-the-shoulder sweater—trendy and flattering. But when I stood next to my client in the dressing room, our outfits clashed so badly that we both looked… off!! I felt so awkward, distracted, and immediately realized that my outfit had unintentionally collided with our styling intentions.

From that day forward, I made a quiet vow: never again would I let my personal style interfere with someone else’s transformation.

So yes, I have an aesthetic. Yes, my brand is iconic, symbolic, and infused with deep meaning. But when I’m doing the deep work—when we’re uncovering identity, voice, and visual direction—I wear black intentionally!

In Conclusion:

🖤 Do you wear something as a ritual or act of intention?

🖤 Do you create visual neutrality so your clients can feel more like themselves?

🖤 Are you consciously using your presence and energy to hold space?

🖤 And most importantly—what silent signals are you sending… and are they aligned with what you’re here to help others become?
